Meet the Team: Markus Niemelä, Finland
Markus Niemelä has been with Ritchie Bros. for almost three years, covering the Finnish market. Before joining the company, he spent 15 years working with online reserved auctions and eight years in the rental industry.
A week on the road
Markus splits his week between preparation and presence. Mondays and Tuesdays are spent at his home office: closing deals, preparing proposals, and booking meetings. From Wednesday to Friday, he's on the road, meeting customers and supporting them directly in the field. His work brings him close to rental companies, dealers, construction firms, and the mining industry.
Delivering under pressure
One deal stands out for Markus: a rental company needed to sell around 20 excavators (20-30 tons) during a single summer, a tight volume to move in a short window. Ritchie Bros. delivered exactly as promised, selling the machines successfully, and the relationship has continued ever since.
Another client needed to sell two nearly unused Volvo dumpers on short notice. Markus and his team secured a buyer within two working days, turning an urgent situation into a smooth transaction. Among the more unusual pieces of equipment he's helped sell: a tower crane.
What clients look for
According to Markus, clients in the Nordics value a clean, hassle-free process and reliable information that helps them make confident decisions. He also points to a market feature specific to the region: many machines come with Nordic specifications built for winter conditions and versatile use. Transportation to other markets is often expensive, which supports a strong internal market with high valuations, but also makes it more volatile.
Beyond the job
Outside of work, Markus enjoys hiking in Finland's national parks. One thing people might be surprised to learn about him: he has five children.
In his own words
Asked to describe what he does in one sentence, Markus says:
"I provide versatile, insight-driven transaction solutions that help customers sell and buy equipment with confidence."
